Keeping the biblical back ground in our mind that there are twelve sons of Jacob later known as Israel. His sons bear each one name for twelve different tribes in the history of Hebrew. Like wise in the life of santal there are twelve clan bearing the name and each one having totem .clan Name ---       Totem  ---   status--- Element
1.Hasdakk  ---     swan    --- adviser --- water. land, earth and heaven.
2. Murmu   ---     antelope   ---  priest---           land
3. kisku    ---        kingfisher   ---  king---        heaven and earth
4. Hembrom---    betel nut    ---    nobility and truthfulness---     earth(upper)
5. Marndi   ---     weed    ---       traders---            earth(low)
6. Soren    ---    constelation pleiades --- solder---  heaven(upper)
7. Tudu     ---     owl      ---       musician---         heaven
8. Baske   ---    stale rice   ---   cook---            earth
9. Besra      ---      hawk    ---                            heaven
10. Bedea   ---     sheep    ---                           land
11.Pauria      ---     Pigeon   ---                         heaven
12. chore        ---             Lizard       ---              earth
Restriction in marriage between certain clans:
The reason lie in the nature of the totems and the elements they are connected with.
In the first place, marriages are forbidden between water (Hasdak, [swan]) and land (Murmu. [Antelope]).
It is restricted between lower heaven(kisku [kingfisher]) and lower earth(Marandi[weed])
And also upper earth(Hembrom[betel nut] and upper heaven(Soren [constelation Pleiades] )---
Secondly marriage prohibited three heavenly birds-Owl, hawk and pigeon)[Tudu, Besra andPauria] the totems also define the relationship between the consumer and consumed. Rice is eaten by the Pigeon who is the prey of the hawk along with the Lizard is also hunted by the owl. Therefore, initially the Chores did not marry any one with Besra and Tudu. These restrictions are not followed any more and marriages take place between all clan members.
